Our Kids
The children P.S. I Love You Foundation reaches are at-risk children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old in K-5th grade. Most of these children attend Title I schools systems, stay in shelters and come from low income areas such as Hawthorne, Compton, Watts, Inglewood, South Central, Redondo Beach and Long Beach.
Since the definition of "at-risk" is very different for most non-profit organizations, we will explain what our definition of at-risk means. "At-risk" children to PS I Love You defines children living in or near poverty level with an unstable or broken family unit of support. Since P.S. I Love You does not have children of our own, per say, we reach many of our children through partnerships with shelters, other non-profits and Title 1 Schools. “Title 1" refers to the school systems having at least 51% of their child population living at-risk via food stamps, welfare etc.
In addition to poverty level and broken family units, our partner shelters and schools also have their “at-risk” definition that includes but is not limited to children exposed to: physical abuse, sexual abuse, foster care, neglect, drugs, gangs and even mentally handicapped. So many of our kids have lots of obstacles in their young lives.
When we look for children to fulfill our programs, we partner with professional organizations that already have the databases, the psychologists and the professionals in place to evaluate the child's situation, the poverty level and the family unit support.
